Looks like Apple is about to add one more carrier for their haloed iPhone smartphone. This piece of news comes from the CES grounds where the CTO of T-Mobile, Neville Ray, told the press that the next the next version of the popular smartphone device from Apple will be supporting the carrier.

According to his comment, the upcoming iPhone will be supporting the Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) frequency that T-Mobile uses for their 3G-network. If this really happens, then T-Mobile will have a fighting chance in the smartphone market where VZW, AT&T and Sprint are just about dominating the market. T-Mobile has flourishing business across the Atlantic but in the US they are simply not making a mark enough.

The carrier has been working hard on promoting the Android handsets that it offers. With the iPhone news tucked under their belt, they will be able to get a lot more attention from the customers than they are getting right now. Ever since its merger with AT&T failed, it has bled customers. People left the carrier because they were worried about what the future held for the carrier, whether it would exist at all.

One more thing about this carrier — it is the only one of the top four carriers in the US that does not support the iPhone. This has nothing to do with Apple’s decision to keep it out or their decision not to support it. It has everything to do with a difference in technology. The carrier works on an HSPA+ network, which the iPhone does not support as of the iPhone 4S. This in fact may be seen as the very reason why T-Mobile is now doing so well in this segment. If they cannot support one of the most popular phones on the market, it definitely is time to get out there and do something about it.

Although it is not clear if this is just Apple covering all their bases with increasing competition or some cajoling at work from T-Mobile, it is definitely not very hard to achievement technically. According to the company, the carrier will have to put in some extra effort to ensure that the iPhone works properly on the platform.

There have of course been reports of T-Mobile working to bring the iPhone to their network but so far Apple has probably not seen at a top priority thing. Because supporting that network would mean the addition the chipset itself. And that would be on top of all that is already there. So Apple’s timing, if this is true, might be suggestive of the increase pressure from the competition and the need to cover all bases and support all the major networks.

T-Mobile would be the last in joining the iPhone game as the rest 3 out of 4 top carriers have gotten in on it. Sprint, Verizon Wireless and AT&T have already been selling iPhones with Sprint selling it for the shortest period of time.
